Kolkata's the Eden Gardens to host three World Cup matches after the International Cricket Council (ICC)

Kolkata's the Eden Gardens cricket ground is on course to host three World Cup matches after the International Cricket Council (ICC) said it was pleased with progress made.

The ground lost its opening match, between England and India, but if scheduled renovation work is completed on time, it will be able to host three matches in March.

A three-person ICC inspection team visited the ground on Monday 7th February and was satisfied that outstanding work will be completed in time for the matches.

“We are pleased with the progress made since January 25 and if that pace of work is maintained, we believe that the stadium will be ready for the games scheduled in March," ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat said.

The three matches that the ground is scheduled to host are South Africa v Ireland on 15th March, Ireland v Netherlands on 18th march and Zimbabwe v Kenya on 20th March.

England's match against India will now be played on 27th February in Bangalore.
